Apple Prosciutto Gruyere Grilled Cheese Sandwich! A delicious blend of sweet, crisp apple, salty prosciutto and delicious gruyere, all melted into a perfect grilled cheese sandwich!!!
Ever since my first wine and cheese party, I’ve been hooked. Crostini, charcuterie platter, cheese, fruit and wine and more. Give me all of this at a gathering or party and I am a very happy person.
Wine and cheese. They just go together.
There’s something about how the wine brings out the flavor in the cheese, like a good bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot does with a nice, big juicy steak. And when I attended my first fondue party at a local cheese shop here in Madison, they served a delicious bottle of Sauvignon Blanc with their swiss and gruyere fondue and it was heaven on earth. Heaven on earth I tell you. It was just so delicious.
Since then, I always have to have some great tasting wine when I am nibbling on cheese. Or even a grilled cheese sandwich.
I mean, it is National Grilled Cheese Month after all!! Can I tell you how excited I am for this month and for today?! We are partnering with
Now, I have to give credit to this awesome “how to make a grilled cheese sandwich” post from
And when it comes to cheese and a grilled cheese sandwich, you must grate the cheese. It helps the cheese to melt faster and evenly.
Once you have everything prepped, you are ready to begin! Like I stated earlier, I wanted to achieve that perfectly toasted, buttery grilled cheese toasted bread, so I buttered my bread slices AND added a tablespoon of butter to my skillet.
Once the butter begins to melt, lay down one slice of buttered bread and top with the freshly grated cheese. Next, cover your pan! If you do this, your cheese will melt perfectly and you’ll also get the “outer crust perfection”.
Next, butter one side of the second slice of bread and spread
Your Apple, Prosciutto and Gruyere grilled cheese is ready to be sliced and devoured. Now, this grilled cheese could easily be eaten as is but I like to add a little more sweetness. . so I add a little fig jam, as I am eating the grilled cheese. . which goes very nicely with

Apple, Prosciutto and Gruyere is such a great combination. Adding all that delicious butter, spoonsfuls of fig jam and then pairing it with a smooth GFV Sauvignon Blanc makes this a grilled cheese I have to try!

Jamie@ Milk 'n' Cookies
This looks like one amazing grilled cheese! And yes, buttering the pan and both slices of bread definitely seems like the way to go — grilled cheese is not the place to skimp on the butter! I’ve never tried wine with grilled cheese, but now you have me convinced that I need to give it a shot. I love that your recipe essentially creates a classic cheese plate, with the mixture of cheese, fruit, and meat. YUM!!
hipfoodiemom
Thank you so much, Jamie!!

Oh my gosh. I am in heaven… grilled cheese is one of my very favourite things! LOVE the combination here… apple and cheese go together like peas and carrots (well, metaphorically… I think that peas go better with goats cheese or mint myself) and the wine suggestion is divine! Cannot wait to click through the other grilled cheese posts… hugs to you Alice! x
Sarah | Curious Cuisiniere
This sweet and salty combo sounds like heaven!
Dorothy at Shockingly Delicious
Big fan here of apple slices in grilled cheese! You’d like pear slices in it, too, I predict. LOVELY sandiwch!
Nancy @ gottagetbaked
Sweet baby cheezus, you’re talking my language girl! This grilled cheese sandwich looks incredible! That’s a perfect buttery crunchy crust and I love the ingredients you used inside. I’m especially down with that smear of fig jam. I learned the trick about covering the pan with a lid about a year ago and ever since, I’ve always had perfectly melted cheese in my sandwiches. You might be a little appalled (or impressed…or both!) at the insane amount of butter I put in my pan. It’s the only way to go. I wish I had a bottle of that wine right now, Alice!
Roz
Oh Alice, this is the only way to make a grilled cheese in my opinion . . . I mean GRUYERE? Genius! Definitely preparing this one! Roz
Katie C
Ok, this is seriously a heavenly combination of ingredients. And the beautiful golden, crisp bread looks to die for!
hipfoodiemom
Awh, thanks Katie!
