Pizza Sandwiches

Pizza Sandwiches! Soooooo delicious to make if you have leftover pizza dough or store bought pizza dough! So great with pesto, arugula and burrata or more traditional with pizza sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni and sausage. Enjoy!

I saw this brilliant idea from Alexandra Cooks on Instagram. This was all her idea! As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to try it. I love buying fresh pizza dough from my local grocery store. They have a “make your own pizza” little section across from the fresh bread in the bakery section. Or, you can make your own dough, homemade. This is my go-to pizza dough recipe.

After watching Ali’s video, I bought a pizza stone and I feel like the pizza stone really made a difference. I mean just look at this dough! It was incredible.  “Pizza stones absorb heat easily and retain that heat for a long period of time. This mimics the effect of a pizzeria’s brick oven by raising the temperature and providing an extra-hot surface to bake the pizza. The higher heat creates a perfect pizza crust but can also cut the baking time to less than 10 minutes, meaning you can pump out pizzas like a real pizzaiolo.” Source here.

I highly recommend this pizza stone.

If you try this, let me know! The possibilities are endless. I can see many different flavor combos going inside!

Equipment

  • pizza stone

Ingredients

  • pizza dough let sit out at room temp for 1-2 hours in a covered vessel
  • all-purpose flour for dusting
  • olive oil extra virgin
  • Maldon sea salt flakes
  • pizza sauce
  • shredded Mozzarella cheese
  • pepperoni
  • sausage
  • crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Place your pizza stone into your cold oven. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees.
  • Working on a lightly floured work surface, roll out your pizza dough to roughly a 10-inch round. Lightly drizzle with olive oil and use a brush to spread the olive oil evenly over the dough. Fold the dough over and brush with more olive oil and then sprinkle with Maldon sea salt flakes.
  • Transfer the prepped pizza dough to your pizza stone. (I sprinkle mine with some flour so it doesn't stick) and bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • When ready, carefully remove the cooked pizza dough from the oven. Open carefully and spread on the pizza sauce, sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese. Add on the pepperoni and sausage and sprinkle on crushed red pepper flakes if desired. If needed, you can pop the pizza sandwich back into the oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese more. Enjoy!
