Our Summer Getaway to Kohler, Wisconsin! If you’re looking to travel to the Midwest, you’ve got to check out Destination Kohler! It’s a great getaway for the entire family!
My family and I recently spent a lovely weekend in Kohler, Wisconsin. Kohler is the destination for a weekend golf getaway, delicious food and relaxing at the luxurious Kohler Waters Spa. It’s also home to the Kohler Food and Wine Experience (which I’ve had the great pleasure of attending twice) but I’ve never visited Kohler with my family. After looking online and discovering all of the wonderful, family friendly and outdoor activities that there were, we booked our trip!
Since we were traveling with the kids and wanted to be closer to the shops, the Craverie Chocolatier Café (where we went everyday for Kohler Original Recipes Chocolates and gelato!) and the restaurants, we chose to stay at The Inn on Woodlake.
Family friendly, spacious rooms and comfortable beds, it’s also in the perfect location and everything was within walking distance! They even have The Woodlake Market, where you can easily pick up any last minute things, food items, anything you would get from a grocery store. . I loved having the convenience of having the market so close to us.
Since I’m a foodie, my initial attraction to Kohler this summer was the Chef’s Table Dinner Series! Located at the Kitchens of Kohler, this is a three-course dinner demonstrated, prepared and served by a featured Destination Kohler chef! We were there for Paella night and Chef Amanda cooked right in front of us, showing us how to make her paella and answered all of our questions.
I cook all the time at home, so I really loved watching Chef Amanda cook for us. There were only two tables, four couples total, so I really appreciated the intimate experience! It was like having your own private chef cook dinner for you! They served different wines for each course and everything was absolutely delicious! We left that night feeling full and satisfied and I also got some great paella cooking tips.
The next morning, we woke up and, because we were staying at The Inn on Woodlake, we were able to enjoy a complimentary breakfast! If you have kids, you know what a bonus this is. We took advantage of the free breakfast (complete with eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage, toast, bagels and even a yogurt parfait bar area!) both mornings.
After breakfast, we were off! The Kitchens of Kohler also offers kids cooking classes! My kids love watching Chopped Junior on The Food Network and they love helping me in the kitchen, so when we learned that they offered classes, we knew we had to sign up! Each week, they have a different theme.
The week we were there, my kids learned how to make pasta salad, a grilled chicken wrap and a lemon tart! They loved the hands-on class and the fun and creative environment. And the best part? Being able to eat what they made for lunch!
For the rest of the day, we took advantage of the beautiful weather. We went for a short walk with the kids, ate at River Wildlife Lodge Restaurant and then took the kids horseback riding!
During the summer, there are a number of activities you can enjoy with the whole family! Self-Guided Canoe/Kayak Rentals, charter and river fishing, trap shooting, youth archery, hiking, garden tours, swimming, guided horseback riding and so much more!
My kids loved riding the horses and had a blast! After returning from the ride, my kids got to help feed the horses. You would think the kids would be tired but they were ready to hit the pool.
Destination Kohler has a Sports Core Health and Racquet Club, complete with pool, sauna and entrance to the lake all in one!
The set up is perfect! Right outside the pool area (and the pool area is indoor), you walk out to the lake. There’s sand and lounge chairs, everything you and your family need to enjoy some time in the water!
Want To Drop Off The Kids?
Offered every Saturday, from 6–9pm, Kohler offers: Kohler Kidz. You can drop your kids off (ages 4-12) $15 per child, for dinner and a movie! Located at the Inn on Woodlake, the Kohler Kidz room is sure to entertain your children while you enjoy a night out in Kohler!
Saturday night, we dined at Cucina Italian Restaurant. The chef features simple, fresh and delicious takes on Italian favorites using seasonal ingredients, including handcrafted pastas, artisan pizzas and wood-fire grilled entrées. It’s also a great spot for an expertly grilled steak and the only place in Sheboygan County that offers a raw bar!
After Dinner
Fridays and Saturdays | 9-11pm – Late Night Wine Flight & Assaggi at Cucina Italian Restaurant
Cucina celebrates the wines of Italy, by serving wines featured on their list, as well as periodic special wines, during extended hours at the Cucina Bar. Stop in for wine, snacks and good times. The Cucina bar features a selection of wines, and a choices of various bite sized snacks, known as Assaggi.
