Tuna melt sandwich

Prep Time7 minutes
Cook Time8 minutes
Total Time15 minutes
Course: Light meal or snack
Keyword: sandwich, tuna, tuna melt
Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 1 (5 oz.) can albacore solid wild tuna* drained
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons celery finely diced
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons red onion finely diced (optional)
  • 4 slices bread
  • butter
  • 4 slices cheese any kind, we like cheddar, Colby jack and mozzarella + more if desired

Instructions

  • Using a bowl, combine the tuna, mayonnaise, mustard, celery and onions and mix together. Feel free to add more mayonnaise if you want a creamier tuna. Set aside. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  • Using a large skillet or non-stick pan over medium high heat, place 2 slices of bread, butter side down into the pan. Top each slice of bread with a slice of cheese (more if desired), and some tuna. Top with the other slice of bread, butter side up, and gently press each sandwich down using a spatula. Cover with a lid and let cook for about 3 to 4 minutes to get nicely browned.
  • Remove the lid and flip each sandwich carefully, and let cook again for another 3 to 4 minutes with the lid back on. The lid helps the cheese to melt and the whole sandwich to warm through. Each side of your tuna melt should be nicely browned and delicious, enjoy!

Notes

*This is the tuna I prefer and enjoy but you can use any tuna for this recipe. Generally, one 5 oz. can makes two sandwiches.
